Chalet Ilex is a 565 m² luxury ski chalet in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, set over five floors and sleeping up to 15 guests across seven bedrooms.
Located in the Hameau de Place, around 100 metres from the piste, it combines the traditional setting of a French Alpine village with a much more contemporary approach to chalet design.
The interior is spacious, considered and full of details that make it particularly interesting to photograph.
Contemporary Alpine interiors
The main living floor brings together the kitchen, dining and living areas, with large windows and a wrap-around balcony looking out towards the mountains.
The design uses natural materials alongside contemporary furniture and lighting, creating the warm feel you'd expect from a ski chalet without making the interiors feel overly traditional.
The kitchen sits at the rear of the main living space, with a large island, modern appliances and a generous dining area seating up to 16. It is a practical space, but also one of the strongest visual features of the chalet.
For interior photography, these larger spaces give a sense of the scale and layout of the property. The smaller details are what add the character.
The details
Luxury chalet interiors are often defined by the details rather than one particular feature.
Furniture, lighting, textiles, artwork and the combination of different materials all contribute to how a room feels. Close-up photographs help to show these elements in a way that isn't always possible in a wider room photograph.
At Ilex, there are plenty of these details to pick out — from statement lighting and contemporary furniture to the finishes and textures used throughout the living spaces.
This is also where photographing a property becomes more than simply documenting each room. A good collection of interior photographs needs a mixture of wide images, mid-range compositions and smaller details, giving the viewer a proper sense of the space.
More than a place to sleep
With seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, Ilex has plenty of space for larger groups, but much of the chalet's appeal comes from the areas designed for spending time together.
There is an indoor swimming pool and sauna, a fully equipped gym, massage room, cinema room, games room, bar and TV lounge, as well as an outdoor hot tub.
The result is a chalet designed as much around what happens after skiing as it is around the skiing itself.
That gives the photography plenty of different spaces to work with, from the main living areas and bedrooms to the wellness and leisure spaces.
A chalet in the Three Valleys
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville is part of Les Trois Vallées, but has retained the feel of a traditional mountain village.
Chalet Ilex is located in the Hameau de Place, with views across the village, church, surrounding mountains and ski slopes. Its position close to the piste means the chalet is practical for a ski holiday, while the interior provides plenty of space to return to at the end of the day.
For a property like this, photography needs to show both sides of it: the location and scale of the chalet, but also the smaller details that make the interior distinctive.
